People’s ASEAN
More than 1000 participants from the ASEAN region gathered in Bangkok, prior to the official ASEAN summit. A statement, “Advancing a People's ASEAN”, highlighted the priorities of a people-centred ASEAN.

“We [...] are committed to work together to build a genuine “people-centred ASEAN”, where all policies are decided by the people, so that an ASEAN community based on human rights, human dignity, participation and social dialogue, social and economic justice, cultural and ecological diversity, environmentally sustainable development, and gender equality can be established. We will continue to make ASEAN accountable to the voices and the needs of the peoples by continuing to effectively monitor the work of ASEAN.”

The leadup to the ASEAN Summit was a weekend of contrasts. People from the same region came together, but remained far apart. On the one side were ASEAN officials, the “elected or self-appointed individuals” and on the other hundreds of groups representing the issues and passions of the wider constituencies of the people of ASEAN.
