Members of the European Parliament (MEP) have tabled their amendments to the Draft report on the European Union (EU)-India FTA, presented by MEP Rapporteur Karim Sajjad (dated January 18, 2009). » Regional integration: Bangladesh-India trade and investment agreements
Two trade related agreements between Bangladesh and India have been signed on February 9th, but they come with discussions on mega projects for infrastructure development and reinforcement of militarization. One of these agreements is a renewal of the Bilateral trade agreement, under which both countries are able to use their waterways, roadways and railways for transportation of goods between two places in one country through the territory of the other (Bilateral trade agreement signed in 2006). The other one is a new treaty, a Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPA), which includes a most favoured nation (MFN) clause. Read Details... |

» Discussions on options for the Global South
The global economic crisis has given further impetus to the discussions on options for the Global South. One of these includes South-South trade. While sounding like a viable and sustainable alternative, it does not adequately challenge the dominant models of trade, nor is it a real break with neoliberalism. At the recently concluded WSF, (held in Belem, Brazil from Jan 27 to Feb 1, 2009), Latin American social movements held a dialogue with the leaders of four progressive South American governments on South-South integration from a peoples' perspective.
