Social, environmental issues may delay India-EU trade pact

The European Union’s (EU’s) rigid stand on the inclusion of social and environmental issues in a FTA with India may delay the finalization of the pact.

India has been successful in exporting farm goods to Europe and there is potential to do much more, feels European Union’s Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel. She says that the EU would support special safeguards for Indian farmers and push for the development objective of the Doha round of WTO negotiations. “We are at the moment discussing an FTA and honestly I would like to see a bit more energy injected into these negotiations”, she added.
